Keele Alumni Create Prescription Ordering App

DIMEC App

March 2016

An online pharmacy company founded by two Keele University graduates has released a mobile phone app that changes the way that people can order, track and obtain their NHS repeat prescriptions.

DIMEC Pharmacy, based at Keele University Science and Innovation Park, developed the app with the aim of making pharmacy more convenient, more accessible and less of a burden to patients.

Through the app, patients are able to order their NHS repeat prescription on the go with free delivery, order status notifications and customised reminders for all their medications.  There is also a world first link with Apple’s Medical ID service, meaning that the patient’s medicine and allergy information can be available to Healthcare Professionals in the event of an emergency.

DIMEC was set up by Keele MPharm (Master of Pharmacy) graduates Andrew Bailey and Chris Turner in 2013.  Initially taking up residence in the Science and Innovation Park’s Nova Centre, DIMEC took advantage of the Centre’s bespoke Business Growth Programme and subsequently expanded into larger premises within the Park.

Speaking about the launch of the app, Andrew, DIMEC’s Managing Director, said: “We are delighted that our DIMEC app is finally available, as we firmly believe that it completely changes the way in which people are able to order their medications.

“No longer do patients have to ring their doctor’s surgery or their local pharmacy during opening hours, nor do they have to make trips to the doctor to collect their prescription before waiting for it to be dispensed at a pharmacy.  The DIMEC app will take care of all of this for you, including delivery to your door, completely free of charge.  It will even update you at regular intervals to let you know exactly what stage your prescription is at. We’re always working to improve our service, so watch this space!”

Chris, DIMEC’s Superintendent Pharmacist, added: “We’ve designed the app so that it is free and simple to use.  Just enter your prescription from your repeat slip, decide what you’d like to order, select whether you pay or have an exemption and place your order.  There’s no need to contact your GP as we do all the hard work for you, making it so easy to use.  If you have an Apple device, you can also copy your medicines and allergies to the Medical ID service at the click of a button, meaning that this critical information will be available to Healthcare Professionals on your device and could even save your life.

“The Business Growth Programme offered at Keele was a significant benefit for us.  We knew that we had an idea that would bring pharmacy services into the modern era, but the knowledge, support and development opportunities that we’ve had access to as a result of being based on the Science and Innovation Park has helped us to realise our ambition and more.”

The DIMEC App is available from the Apple App Store and Google Play, whilst further information is available by visiting www.dimec.me.  For details regarding Keele University Science and Innovation Park, please visit www.kusip.co.uk.
